ABOUT
Lisa
Mitchell, M.S
As a therapist with 20 years of experience working
with a wide variety of people and problems, I’ve always been excited by
the transformative power of art. Before opening The Art Therapy Studio
I had used art in foster family agencies with traumatized and abused
children to help them soothe their anxiety and fear. I had relied on
art and helped families living with domestic violence and drug addiction to
learn new patterns of relating to themselves and one another. I had
watched art facilitate meaningful sharing between seemingly hardened
juvenile sex offenders. I had invited individuals and couples to use
art as a healthier means of communication and validation in a community
counseling clinic.
In August of 2003, I decided that I wanted to open
a studio and make art therapy available to a wider range of people in an
environment that was alive with creative potential. At The Art Therapy
Studio, I’ve created a therapeutic studio environment that is infused with the invitation to create and express. I nurture and coach each client to find his/her own
expressive voice in the materials. I see a broad spectrum of people;
those who are suffering from serious mental health issues and those who
are seeking deeper meaning and self discovery. I have also emphasized
the education of parents and therapists about the healing qualities of
art and creativity. Hundreds of therapists have come to my studio to learn about art
therapy and how to use it in their practices and for themselves. I
bring my passion for creativity as a vital part of living and healing to
all of the experiences I offer at The Art Therapy Studio.
The Art Therapy Studio is located in Fair Oaks
Village near Sacramento, California. It is across the street from the
park and boasts the presence of free range roosters! There is a nearly
limitless supply of art materials, lots of good table space, a painting
wall (where you can splatter paint—or not), and plenty of encouragement
and support.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
(MFC33800) and a Registered Art Therapist (97-010). I graduated from
California State University—Sacramento with my M.S. in Counseling and
Art Therapy in 1994. I enjoy a creative and busy life with my husband,
my 3 children, and my Weimeraner.
